The London Borough of Greenwich is situated in south-east London and forms part of Inner London. The Borough covers more than 5,000 hectares area and has a population of approximately 222,600 people. It includes the following 17 wards: Abbey Wood, Blackheath Westcombe, Charlton, Coldharbour and New Eltham, Eltham North, Eltham South, Eltham West, Glyndon, Greenwich West, Kidbrooke with Hornfair, Middle Park and Sutcliffe, Peninsula, Plumstead, Shooters Hill, Thamesmead Moorings, Woolwich Common and Woolwich Riverside. The borough was formed in 1965 by combining the former area of the metropolitan boroughs of Greenwich and most of Woolwich. The area remained undeveloped until the 19th century. But after that because of the river allowing exporting and importing goods it became a prosper home for soap manufacture, linoleum, gas and other industries, rope making and cable making. The first cable to span the Atlantic was manufactured here. |
