Subfloor Preparation for Parquet Flooring

Level of the subfloor is key to fault-free herringbone & chevron installations

Before installing parquet flooring, proper subfloor preparation is crucial to ensure a smooth and long-lasting installation. Here are the typical steps involved in subfloor preparation for parquet flooring:

  1. Cleanliness: The existing subfloor must be thoroughly cleaned of any debris, dirt, dust, and other contaminants. This ensures a clean surface for proper adhesion of the flooring materials.

  2. Leveling: The subfloor should be checked for levelness. Any uneven areas should be addressed to prevent visible bumps or dips in the finished flooring. In the case of concrete subfloor, this can be done using self-leveling compounds or by sanding down high spots and filling in low spots with suitable patching compounds. In case of timber subfloors or joists, levelling can be done with plywood or chipboard.

  3. Moisture content check and DPM application: Moisture can adversely affect parquet flooring. It's essential to test the moisture content of the subfloor using a moisture meter. Ideally, the subfloor moisture content should be within the acceptable range recommended by the flooring manufacturer. If moisture levels are too high, mitigation measures such as moisture barriers or moisture-resistant underlayments may be necessary.

  4. Subfloor stability: Ensure that the subfloor is stable and securely attached to the underlying structure. Loose or squeaky floorboards should be fixed by re-securing them to the joists or subfloor.

  5. Smoothness: The subfloor should be smooth to avoid any telegraphing of imperfections through the parquet flooring. Sanding or grinding may be required to achieve a smooth surface, especially if the subfloor is made of concrete.

  6. Checking for Obstructions: Ensure that there are no obstructions such as protruding nails, staples, or debris that could interfere with the installation process. These should be removed or hammered down flush with the subfloor.

By following these subfloor preparation steps diligently,we create an optimal foundation for your parquet flooring installation. Proper preparation not only ensures a smoother installation process but also enhances the longevity and performance of your new flooring. Always refer to the specific installation guidelines provided by the parquet flooring manufacturer and consult with a professional if you have any doubts or specific challenges with your subfloor.
