Secret nailing (nail-down) is highly recommended with solid wood flooring laid over wooden subfloors as it creates strong bond that can safely secure the contraction of the hardwood between seasons.
Floating is ideal for engineered and laminate floors - it allows the flooring to be laid with layer of underlay, which can tackle sound proofing or damp proofing issues. It also the recommended installation for properties / flats with shared walls and ceilings.
